Thomas W. Lollar

Instead of creating a work of art directly out of clay as a potter would, Mr. Lollar allows the clay to dry, and then sculpts the clay into the final art piece. His signature works are clay murals constructed from individual, three-dimensional tiles showing a map or scene. He also does commemorative vessels and tureens. The Titanic, the Aquitania, and the Sinking Titanic Series are examples of another passion of Mr. Lollars. "I am fascinated by the oceanliners and how their design reflects the taste of an era. I create my ships as monuments to the great architecture of the ships of the early 20th century." His works display a highly subtle artistic awareness of past cultural values infused with irony and humor.
